Enrichment Ideas
for Your Household Pets

The Zoo provides many enrichment activities for the animals that live here.

Click HERE to learn more about the kinds of things we do and how they benefit the animals.

There are also things that you can do to enrich the lives of the animals that live in and around your household.

  1. Natasha the catHide treats to keep pets active and focused.

  2. Find a special toy your pet likes and only give it to them when you leave the house. When you return, put the toy away until the next time you leave.

  3. Make your pet a popsicle! Fill an ice cube tray halfway with water and the other half with a little bit of canned tuna or catnip. Then, just freeze the ice cubes and this can become a great treat for your pet.

  4. Blow bubbles with your pet. Not only is this an inexpensive and relatively clean game, but they will find it intriguing to watch and will want to play.

  5. Play peekaboo with your pet. Hide toys behind pillows or furniture peeking out. This adds their levels of creativity and discovery.

  6. Buy a “feeder ball” for your pet.  Fill this hollow ball with kibble type pet food.  As your dog or cat bats the ball around, bits of food will fall out.  This keeps them interested – and it takes longer for them to eat!

  7. For small animals, provide a decent-sized cage with plenty of room and wheels or toys that they can interact with. Small animals tend to enjoy places to hide-away so give them lots of places to play.

  8. Maintain a healthy diet and exercise for your pet. Don’t feed your pets too much and ensure that they get plenty of exercise. This will enrich not only the pet’s life, but your own life as well.

  9. Dogs generally don’t like to be alone so give them something or someone to play with when you’re not available.

  10. Training your dog to obey simple commands will bring challenge and social interaction into their life.

  11. During the hot summer months, ensure that your pet has adequate water supply and stays in the coolest possible place.

FOR CATS

  1. Provide a variety of toys to always keep them happy. Each toy has a different technique to it, so mixing it up can lessen the boredom for your cat.

  2. Allow cats to explore random objects such as cardboard boxes or an empty paper bag. They will love the hidden spaces and new places to discover.

  3. Allow your cat to watch television with birds flying and chirping or even watch a lava lamp in motion. They will be mesmerized by watching the lights change or the birds fly across the TV screen.

  4. Position outside birdfeeders, etc. near windows so your cat can enjoy watching the birds and wildlife from inside the house.

  5. Provide several small meals per day rather than one or two large ones.
